DOCS: The Girl Who Cries Blood
SUBSCRIBE:
Twinkle is a 13-year-old girl from the northern Indian city of Lucknow. She suffers from a frightening and as yet undiagnosed condition: for nearly two years, she has cried tears of blood.
Twinkle also spontaneously bleeds from her head, hands and feet.
The youngster’s Hindu neighbours and local devotees of the Goddess Kali believe she’s possessed by a restless spirit.
Others think her mysterious illness is reminiscent of ‘stigmata’: a manifestation of the wounds suffered by Christ during his final days and crucifixion. Throughout the history of the Catholic faith, just over 300 people have reportedly claimed to be stigmatics – the majority of them women.
Desperate for answers, Twinkle’s relatives have taken her to see doctors and specialists across the country, but none have been able to treat her. Worse still, the Indian medical establishment have accused the family of faking the phenomenon.
This documentary follows Twinkle and those close to her as they seek the opinion of various religious figures, from bishops to gurus, and also meet leading Paediatric Haematologist Dr. George Buchanan, who’s travelled to India to meet the teenager. He thinks she may have a problem with her platelets – cells that help blood to clot – or a form of cancer, but he’ll need to run tests to find out more.
Watch as Twinkle and her mother seek answers by consulting both medical and mystical sources. What is the truth?
Is Twinkle blessed, or possessed? Does she have a rare illness? Or could she be the victim of abuse?
