The bastards are sure not grinding this one down.
In a not too surprising turn of events, Handmaid’s Tale swept the Golden Globes with a Best Drama Series win and a big win as Best Actress for Elisabeth Moss as the lead character of Offred. These big wins aren’t too surprising though as Hulu’s ‘The Handmaid’s Tale” won big at the Emmys earlier this year, winning 8 awards including Outstanding Lead Actress and Outstanding Drama series.
At the Globes, however, Elisabeth rattled off a few quick thank you to her team and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, but then turned it over to the real powerhouse behind the show: Margaret Atwood the author of the original novel which Hulu then adapted into the award-winning series. She pulled out a piece of paper and read the following taken directly from the novel:
She then directly dedicated the award to Margaret Atwood and to all the women who came before and after her committed to erasing gender inequality.
She finished by paraphrasing the quote she selected as a rallying cry.
It was quite the night of female empowerment with many acceptance speeches and award presentations sprinkling in references to TimesUp, MeToo and expressing solidarity with women all across the industry. In case you were wndering, TimesUp isn’t just a hashtag, it’s a new legal defense fund started by women in entertainment to support women experiencing sexual harassment and abuse in the workplace in all fields. How amazing! Well, now I want to know what you thought of Elisabeth’s speech and were you surprised that she won?
