I recently visited some amazing malls in Jakarta (you can see that here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mWwnqXJzu64) and after doing that, a lot of people asked me to check out some of the markets in Jakarta.
First I visited Pasar Baru here in Jakarta. It is a huge market which is lined with many different shops, selling so many different types of items. Things like Tailors making hand made suits, shops selling lots of Batik, many restaurants selling lots of nice local Indonesian food and different gift shops selling all manner of interesting items. It is shaped like a cross with outlets everywhere in between.
Also, just beside Pasar Baru is the really cool local Gallery 'Galeri Foto Jurnalistik Antara'. As the name suggests it is Gallery dedicated to Photo Journalism from the Antara media outlet. It features lots if interesting photography and exhibits. It is free entry so it is a nice place to check out and spend an hour or so.
After visiting these places, I decided to go check out the another market called Tanah Abang. This was an experience I will never forget. It is HUGE! About 7 floors (and these are big, big floors) that have hundreds, if not thousands, of stalls selling absolutely everything. Really, any type of clothing or accessory you can imagine, you will probably find it here. It is an amazing, hectic and exciting place.
At both places, every person I encountered was so friendly. Always saying hello to me and it was really nice to experience.
I really love the Indonesian people, they are really great people.
