With a new Malaysian government that assumed power in November 2022, prospects have grown for significant reforms to, or even revocation of, various statutes that violate civil and political rights, including the freedom of expression and association, and peaceful public assembly. From the perspective of the international human rights community, what are the priorities for these reforms, and why? How does the continued abuse of laws and regulations affect Malaysia’s international reputation? And from a domestic point of view, why should Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and his Government take up human rights issues, even in the face of significant resistance from the political opposition?
