The cost of treatment for Hepatitis C may soon become much more afforable. Health Minister Dr. S Subramaniam said yesterday that it could go as low as RM500 by the end of the year.
This is through exploiting the patented Sofosbuvir tablets under the Rights of Government under Patent Act 1983. Subra explained that the decision was made after price negotiations with the patent holder were unsuccessful
It is expected to be offered at 12 Health Ministry hospitals at the end of the year.
The current cost of Hepatitis C treatment is about RM50,000 with an estimated 500,000 patients in Malaysia. An estimated 2,000 new cases are reported each year.
