Obviously he’s named after William and Kate’s favorite One Direction member, right?
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, aka: William and Kate, gave birth to their third child, a boy, earlier this week, and everyone has been patiently waiting for the pair to announce the name of the new royal baby. On Friday that announcement finally came via an official statement from Kensington Palace, which read QUOTE, “The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are delighted to announce that they have named their son Louis Arthur Charles. The baby will be known as His Royal Highness Prince Louis of Cambridge."
Besides our interpretation that baby Louis is named after British national treasure Louis Tomlinson, there are a lot of other theories as to how Prince Louis Arthur Charles got his name. The name Louis is significant, because no British monarch has EVER had Louis as a first name -- though plenty of French monarchs have. So already, at just a few days old, Prince Louis is the most rebellious royal sibling.
The name Louis HAS been the middle name of a number of British monarchs, including his own dad. William’s full name is William Arthur Philip Louis, and William and Kate’s first born is George Alexander Louis. Louis is also the middle name of Queen Elizabeth II’s youngest child, Prince Edward Antony Richard Louis. Wow these monarchs have more names than their are Kardashians.
Besides Louis being named after his dad, brother or great uncle, he could also possibly be named after Lord Louis Mountbatten, who was a British naval officer, and the great grandson to Queen Victoria. According to CNN, Lord Mountbatten claimed to be a “mentor” to Prince Charles, before he was killed by the IRA in Ireland in 1979.
And then there’s also a connection with the name to Princess Diana, as one of her nephews was named Louis Spencer.
CNN also reports that the name Louis also comes from the name “Ludwig,” which can be interpreted as "renowned warrior."
As for Louis’ middle names, Arthur and Charles, obviously Charles is the name of his grandfather, but so is Arthur! That’s right, Prince Charles’s full name is Charles Philip Arthur George. And as we mentioned earlier, Arthur is one of Prince William’s middle names, too. Charles is also a middle name of Prince Harry, whose full name is Henry Charles Albert David. He could also be named after King Charles I and King Charles II, but we’re guessing the significance comes from his dad, uncle, and grandfather first and foremost.
And then there’s always the legendary British leader King Arthur, and if WE were Prince Louis--we’d probably tell all our friends we were named after him, simply because it’s so much more badass.
Alright guys now that we’ve broken down the significance of ALL of Prince Louis’s names -- what do you think of his name? And who do you think he’s REALLY named after? You know, besides Louis Tomlinson. Sound off with all your thoughts and feelings in the comments below! Thanks so much for joining me, I’m your host Erin Robinson, and I’ll see you next time!
