When in Kobe, you have GOT to eat Kobe beef. We visited Nishimuraya a restaurant which is owned by a family of butchers. They are located in central Kobe (just a few minutes walk from Sannomiya train station). We visited at lunch time and ate the yakiniku set lunch which was incredible value. All set lunches come with rice, miso soup, a side dish and salad. Our lunch set of included Kobe short rib and premium Kobe beef. It was amazing getting to sample Kobe beef in Kobe.
After an incredible lunch we visit Nada which is a primary sake producing region of Japan. We visit Hakutsuru and Fukuju brewery. Hakutsuru had a museum with English videos and an English pamphlet which explained the sake making process. There are a number of breweries in the Nada area all of which are within walking distance of each other.
We also visit Chinatown in Kobe which is said to be the second biggest Chinatown in Japan. It's a little bit quiet and although there's lots of food on offer, there's nothing really that appeals.
We traveled to Kobe on a day trip from Osaka. It's only 30 minutes or so on the train and it's a really cheap and easy trip. Totally worth it to eat amazing Kobe beef.
The Kobe beef restaurant we ate at was called Nishimuraya: www.kobe-nishimuraya.com
We hope we've inspired you to eat and explore like a traveler, not a tourist.
