When I was in Jakarta, for lunch I went to Sop Konro Karebosi, a restaurant that specializes in Makassar style beef ribs, both in soup and grilled. Check out my full Jakarta travel guide for food lovers here:
Makassar, located in southern Sulawesi, is known throughout Indonesia for its food, and one of the many famous dishes to try is sop konro, which is beef ribs in a soup. To try this dish in Jakarta, I went to Sop Konro Karebosi, a famous restaurant located in an area of Jakarta known as Kelapa Gading. The restaurant was open air but indoors, and all the ribs and the fish were grilling at the front of the restaurant. Along with the ribs soup, they also had grilled ribs, known at konro bakar, and they had grilled milkfish as well, known as ikan bandeng bakar.
Konro bakar (grilled beef ribs) - I had to begin with the konro bakar. The ribs were first boiled I think, and then grilled to give them that wonderful smoky flavor, yet still very tender because they were precooked. After the ribs were finished cooking, they were covered in a peanut sauce. The meat was so unbelievably tender that it literally just slipped off the bone. The ribs were amazing, a little fatty, but delicious.
Sop konro (beef ribs soup) - This is the most famous dish at Sop Konro Karebosi, beef ribs that are cooked in a soup and served with lots of crispy shallots on top. Again, the ribs were equally as tender as the grilled ribs, but without the smoky flavor, but just more of that tender rib meat flavor. Both were outstanding.
Ikan bandeng bakar (grilled milkfish) - I also decided to try some grilled fish as well, which was a little dry, but still pretty good. I didn’t know at the time, but I later researched and found out that it was grilled milkfish.
Finally, to make your meal at Sop Konro Karebosi complete, they had a big communal platter of burasa (rice dumpling) and ketupat (rice cake) on the table to eat. I also highly enjoyed the sambal chili sauce that was on our table.
After finishing that incredible Makassar Indonesian food meal, we walked over to Kedai Kopi & Bakpao Kwang Koan, an old style coffee shop for a good cup of coffee.
