Jimmy Fallon recently admitted on a Hollywood Reporter podcast that he was QUOTE “devastated” by the backlash he received after his September 2016 Tonight Show interview with Donald Trump. You’ll recall that the interview took place BEFORE Trump was elected President, and many Tonight Show fans were outraged at Jimmy’s light and joke-filled interview with the business mogul-turned-reality-star-turned-politician. Instead of asking tough questions or encouraging Trump to comment on some of the offensive remarks he’d made on the campaign trail, Jimmy opted to play with Trump’s hair and throw him softball questions, which painted Trump in a much more favorable light than many Tonight Show fans were comfortable with.
So cut his new Hollywood Reporter interview, and Jimmy has finally opened up about how he really felt in the aftermath of the Trump interview. He revealed his regret on THR’s “Awards Chatter” podcast, saying QUOTE, “I'm sorry. I don't want to make anyone angry — I never do and I never will. It's all in the fun of the show. I made a mistake. I'm sorry if I made anyone mad. And, looking back, I would do it differently.”
Well President Trump got wind of those comments and fired back at Jimmy on Twitter, writing QUOTE, “@jimmyfallon is now whimpering to all that he did the famous ‘hair show’ with me (where he seriously messed up my hair), & that he would have now done it differently because it is said to have ‘humanized’ me - he is taking heat. He called & said ‘monster ratings.’ Be a man Jimmy!”
Jimmy didn’t respond to Trump’s allegation that he called him to brag about the episode’s ratings, and he didn’t comment on how he “seriously” messed up his guest’s hair, but he DID respond to the President’s “be a man” taunt. Jimmy tweeted QUOTE, “In honor of the President’s tweet I’ll be making a donation to RAICES in his name.”
RAICES stands for “Refugee and Immigrant Center For Education and Legal Services”, and is an advocacy group that has been raising money in order to help reunite and provide legal services for detained undocumented immigrant families, who’ve recently been affected by Trump’s “zero tolerance” policy at the US-Mexico border.
So now I wanna turn things over to you guys -- are you surprised Jimmy admitted to regretting how he handled that Trump interview? And what do you think of his response to the president’s Tweet?
