Justin Bieber offends his Chinese fans on Instagram by honoring some of Japan's worst war criminals.
We can all admit that Justin Bieber is many things, but a history buff he is not, and that was quite clear this week when the Biebs visited the Yasukuni Shrine in Tokyo Japan.
To give you some context, the Yasukuni Shrine honors over 2 million fallen Japanese warriors from World War II, which also includes 14 convicted war criminals who committed mass atrocities across Asia and the Pacific during that war. Other Asian countries like China and South Korea, whose people suffered at the hands of these war criminals take offense to the shine, and even get upset when Japanese officials visit it, because they feel that honoring it and praying to it means that people are celebrating something that was a huge tragedy for their people.
So, while on a personal trip to Toyko, Bieber had his driver pull over because he thought that the popular tourist spot looked like a cool shrine.
Justin proceeded to give someone his phone to take an Instapic, and then walked up to the front of the shrine and began to pray outside. He then took to Instagram and Twitter to post this photo with the caption "Thank you for your blessings."
As you may expect, the post garnered a ton of traction and attention amidst his 51 million followers, but many of Justin's Chinese fans, and even Chinese officials saw the post and felt completely disrespected and begged him to remove the photo. Shortly after, the photo was gone from Justin's Instagram, and this image was uploaded in it's place from Time's website, and with it Bieber issued a huge apology saying "While in Japan I asked my driver to pull over for which I saw a beautiful shrine. I was mislead to think the Shrines were only a place of prayer. To anyone I have offended I am extremely sorry. I love you China and I love you Japan."
Now, it's easy to make such a mistake if you dont know the deep history of such a place, and we think it's quite mature of Bieber to realize that he messed up and post an apology. And honestly, we all mess up from time to time, right? However, Justin later redeemed himself in our eyes by visiting a Japanese orphanage where he spent some time playing with the children there, and he also performed one of his biggest hits, 'Baby' to a crowd of his Japanese fans.
So, in your eyes did Justin Bieber right his wrongs with his apology? Let us know in the comments, and don't forget to click right here to see a brand new episode of this week's Totally Clevver. For Clevver News, Im Erin Robinson, and Ill see you next time.
