It appears as though this is an unfortunate strike two for Karlie Kloss...
The already-controversial March issue of Vogue Magazine has received its share of backlash for its cover’s alleged Photoshop scandal, but the same issue, which is slated as the ‘Diversity Issue’ is once again under fire after photos inside the mag featured supermodel Karlie Kloss dressed as a Geisha, AKA a traditional Japanese entertainer.
The photos, which were shot in Japan by photographer Mikael Jansson, featured Karlie posing alongside a sumo wrestler, walking down the stairs of a tea house dressed in a floral kimono, and even a donning a painted face and a Geisha’s Shimada-styled wig.
Karlie received so much criticism for being a white woman casted in a Japanese-themed spread, that she was forced to release an apology via Twitter. She sent out the statement late last night, writing QUOTE, “These images appropriate a culture that is not my own and I am truly sorry for participating in a shoot that was not culturally sensitive. My goal is, and always will be, to empower and inspire women. I will ensure my future shoots and projects reflect that mission.”
Many Twitter users got hold of the spread, and expressed their anger over the issue, when one user wrote, “Apparently no Japanese models were available for Vogue's 'diversity' issue. Thank god Karlie Kloss could fill in” and another user pointed out that the issue lies within Vogue’s creative directors, saying, “Just imagine how many people had to sign off on this and the fact that NONE of them were like “uh maybe not our brightest idea y'all.”
The photos have since been taken down from Vogue’s website, however, this isn’t Karlie’s first rodeo being under attack for cultural appropriation. Back in 2012, she was involved in another controversy during the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show when she walked the runway wearing a Native American-inspired headdress with high-heel moccasins and fringe leather bra and underwear. She tweeted an apology following the incident as well.
With all that controversy comes a lotta conversation and I know you all have something to say about this, so share all your thoughts on Karlie’s recent fashion controversy right down here in the comments, and as always, be sure to hit that subscribe button for all the latest updates.
