Calling Kim Kardashian’s launch of her new shapewear collection a success would be a serious understatement. She literally earned millions just minutes after the site launched.
What’s up? It’s Sussan Mourad here with Clevver News and by now you’ve probably heard that Kim Kardashian West launched a shapewear line called SKIMS.
And it looks like Kim still has that magic Kardashian touch because according to TMZ, her SKIMS Solutionwear brought in millions of dollars within minutes of going on sale.
More specifically they reported that Kim quote "pushed $2 million in product" within the first few minutes after the launch and almost the entire collection was sold out.
TMZ's sources say these first day numbers are quote "unprecedented for shapewear and undergarment brands."
Just for comparison Spanx made $4 million in profits in their first year, while Skims made half that in just a few minutes.
And to be fair to a regular brand like Spanx, Skims had the massive advantage of being marketed and created by Kim, who has a built-in brand audience and one of the biggest influences on the internet.
Like hello this hilarious Instagram post Kim shared to promote her new line has around 6 million views in just a couple days.
But Kim isn’t just using herself to promote her new brand.
Her sisters, Khloe, Kourtney, Kendall, and Kylie are also all promoting SKIMS and we know that Kardashian influence runs deep.
And Kim also turned to Alice Marie Johnson, who Kim helped free from a life sentence in prison, to help launch her new shapewear.
Skims are available in sizes XXS through 5XL in a variety of shades
I haven’t gotten any Skims yet, but I would be interested to try them. Though I am loyal to my Spanx. They have gotten me through a lot of food babies.
But it looks like Skims would be pretty good at sucking and tucking everything into place too. So I’ll probably have to try a pair.
Anyway, Skims had thousands of items for sale at launch, and lucky for the consumer, nothing was priced higher than $100.
But with so many items already being sold out, apparently Kim and her team are already working to restock products ASAP so that the collection is always available.
Earlier this summer Kim told our sister magazine Cosmo that she knew exactly what she wanted with this new brand.
She said quote, “I know what I want in this area, and that’s not the case with every project I work on. I do get insecure and just ‘Oh, I hope you like it, I hope people understand this and it’ll translate.’ But this one, I’m like no, I got this. I know exactly how to make it comfortable and even a bit sexier.”
And based on how much money it brought in, she was right. But the road to SKIMS wasn’t exactly a smooth one.
When Kim first announced the project, she called it ‘Kimono’ which received serious internet backlash for insensitivity to Japanese culture.
The tweets all looked something like what this person said.
They wrote quote, “Kim Kardashian’s underwear looks great but please, please change the name. I don’t want to explain to my future kids what the difference with Japanese kimono and Kim’s kimono. Kimono means really special to us. #kimonoisnotunderwear”
Even the mayor of Kyoto got involved and made an official request for Kim to reconsider the name.
The mayor wrote quote: “I am writing this letter to convey our thoughts on Kimono and ask you to reconsider your decision of using the name kimono in your trademark. Kimono is a traditional ethnic dress fostered in our rich nature and history.”
Kim had originally said she wasn't planning to change the name, but she eventually reconsidered and decided to turn to her fans for help with the new name.
She spoke out about the rebrand on the Today show.
And she took to Twitter to see what new names her fans liked.
She wrote quote, “We haven’t renamed it, but do you guys like the name Solutionwear? Any other names your liking?
So it looks like Kim saw the tweets and actually used someone’s idea.
That person should’ve copyrighted that tweet or something… or at least I hope Kim sent them a free pair or even set of Skims!
But right now, I want to know your thoughts. What do you think of Kim’s road to shapewear success?!? Can you believe it sold over $2 million in just minutes???
