Korphai, means "a bunch of bamboo," and was established by Anant Narkkong in 1980. The idea was to create a platform for a younger generation of classical-based musicians in Thailand who wanted to exchange new musical ideas and to explore other cross-over areas such as folk-pop, popular, fusion jazz, Asian-mix, and experimental music. The group became widely known in 1983 when it won a prestigious national music contest. Throughout the past 30 years, Korphai has released a number of CD albums and performed in numerous concerts throughout Thailand and internationally in such countries as Austria, England, Scotland, the USA, South Korea, Taiwan, France, China, and Cambodia.Korphai Ensemble also gives lecture-demonstrations and workshops in Thai music for educational and cultural-appreciation purposes.
Korphai Ensemble has composed and played soundtracks for Thai films, documentaries, theatre events, plays, experimental dances and festival presentations. One of their most successful works was the original music for the immensely popular Thai film "Homrong (the Overture)," inspired by the life of the greatest Thai xylophonist and foremost composer of 19th Century Luang Pradithphairoh. Other film soundtracks include "Suriyothai," "Perngmang the Haunted drum" and, most recently, "King Naresuan".
