We knew a year like 2016 couldn’t go out without a bang and Mariah Carey was the unfortunate victim.
Many are calling Mariah’s performance the cherry on top of the disaster we called 2016.
After a year filled with endless celebrity deaths, a tear inducing election, and all around turmoil, it seemed only fitting that something would go down in the last 15 minutes we just didn’t know that something would be Mariah Carey.
Her performance at Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin Eve didn’t go quite as planned as she suffered through severe technical difficulties. It was clear that Mariah could not hear the track and therefore we didn’t get to hear her sing. According to Mariah’s team, the inner ears hadn’t been working all day and when they notified the sound technicians, they assured Mariah that they would work once she went live, but they didn’t. Throughout the performance, Mariah could be heard saying – “Well happy new year. We can’t hear. We didn’t have a sound check for this song.” I’d like to point out that it is pretty normal for a performer to sing along with a pre-recorded backtrack to get the right sound, but that only works when the artists can actually hear it.
TMZ was quick to report that after Mariah’s camp insisted that Mariah’s earpiece was malfunctioning, the producer’s of the show figured a screw up would be great for the special’s ratings and sent her out onstage anyway. When asked what happened, Mariah’s manager told Billboard QUOTE - "We told them [the stage managers] that the in-ears were not working 10 minutes before the performance. They then changed the battery pack, and they were still not working on the frequency four minutes before the show. We let them know again, and they just kept counting her down and reassuring her that they will work as soon as they go live, which never happened—at which point she pulled them out but could not hear the music over the crowd.” She went on to say that she then called Dick Clark Productions asking what happened and after a representative informed her that the earpiece was not working, he asked if she would consider making a joint statement to which she responded saying QUOTE - 'No way.' I asked him to cut the West Coast feed. He said he could not do that. I asked him why would they want to run a performance with mechanical glitches unless they just want eyeballs at any expense ... It's not artist-friendly, especially when the artist cut her vacation short as a New Year's Eve gift to them."
However Dick Clark Productions adamantly denies intentionally sabotaging Mariah’s performance. Mariah’s team responded once again saying that they agree that DCP did not intentionally sabotage her, but they did not apologize for failing to do a good job producing her performance. But even though the whole thing was a train wreck, Mariah was optimistic after the performance tweeting - "S--t happens…Have a happy and healthy new year everybody!...Here's to making more headlines in 2017." Twitter however was not so forgiving. Gloria Fallon tweeted – “With 15 minutes left to 2016, you thought you'd seen the worst, then Mariah Carey happened.” Josh Groban chimed in with – “Any time one of the greatest voices of my generation lip syncs an angel loses its wings.” One person said – “Mariah Carey was like that one person in a group project who didn't do any of the work and now has to present the whole project.” And “2016 claimed another one...Mariah Carey's sound guy.” Aw man. Good riddance 2016. You won’t be missed.
