Respect for the elders should be cultivated, advised Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak during his speech at the Culture Congress 2017 in Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia today.
Though he did not name anyone, while talking about high culture he said part of it is respecting the elderly, even though those who are old shouldn't talk too much, eliciting laughter from the crowd.
Najib said that many of the youths nowadays have become very individualistic and self-centered, seeking only for instant gratification.
They have forgotten how to be humble and community-minded, he said.
External influence through new technologies such as social media, he said, have caused the youths to distance themselves from positive, traditional values inherited from our ancestors.
