Back in 2017 Netflix dropped 13 reasons why, a fictional show about the suicide of a highschool student named Hannah Baker who left behind 13 tapes, each holding a reason for why she ended her life. The show produced by selena gomes received rave reviews, went viral, and also sparked some controversy over the dark subject matter. And now that the Season 2 trailer has dropped, it’s easy to see that more controversy is on the way.
Brian Yorkey is the showrunner of 13 Reasons, and in an interview with EW, he stated “the biggest difference is in season 1, Hannah was telling us her story, we were experiencing it with Clay, and it was the central monolithic story of the season -- her story, where it ended, and how that fell out in the present day,”. He continued on to say QUOTE “Season 2 is very much more about everyone else’s perspective on that story -- their side of the story, their reaction to it, their coming to terms or refusing to come to terms with their role in Hannah’s life and death.”
Wow it really sounds like we season 2 is going to continue to pull at dark strings behind this small town. In the trailer we also see that clay has been pushed so far to the point where he has a gone. Clay is continuing to have visions of Hannah, meanwhile Jessica is being pressured into not saying anything about her sexual assault. And bryce is actually getting called out for being a rapist… Things are more than tense.
In an interview with Buzzfeed, the actress who plays hannah baker katherine langford opened up about how she hopes her show will help spark even more discussion around sexual assault. When 13 Reasons first aired, non of the #metoo movement even existed. Katherine told buzzfeed “What’s so special about being able to put them in a TV show is it brings the issues to light [...] It gets people talking about things that have existed for a long time, but may be taboo to talk about or aren’t spoken about as much as they should be.” Katherine also mentioned that sexual assault survivors had come up to her after season 1 to thank her for her honest portrayal of sexual assault.
