Health Minister Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad said that he had talked to Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng and they have both agreed that there will be no reduction in the prices of cigarettes, even with the abolishment of the GST.
He said this was done in an effort to curb smoking among Malaysians as stroke and cardiovascular diseases account for 22.26 percent of deaths in public hospitals, followed by respiratory diseases at 21 percent.
Cardiovascular diseases are often lifestyle-related, with smoking being the primary culprit.
