Winnie is a Malaysian working in Singapore. In 2021, a man befriended her through Instagram private messages and soon became her online boyfriend. She didn’t know then that she would be entangled in a ‘Pig-Butcher’ scam. In just a few months, she lost more than RM 890,000.

Scams are becoming increasingly sophisticated. Records show that Malaysians lost at least RM1.2 billion to scams in 2023. The Royal Malaysian Police, CelcomDigi, and Malaysiakini have joined forces to launch an anti-fraud campaign, urging the public to be vigilant.
