More than 1,000 people swarmed an Econsave supermarket outlet in Pontian following a rumour that Johor Crown Prince Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim would be sponsoring groceries.
According to Utusan Online, the staff's attempt to explain that the rumour was false fell on deaf ears as shoppers filled their trolleys to the brim and headed to the cashier.
"Pictures and messages circulated saying Tunku Ismail will supposedly sponsor shoppers at Pontian Econsave is completely false.
"We made five or six announcements about this but the people still did not believe us," said Econsave operations manager Mas Imran Adam.
The report said people have been flooding the supermarket as soon as its doors opened this morning.
