Rights group Lawyers for Liberty has succeeded in crowdfunding RM40,000 as bail money for a woman charged with insulting Islam in a stand-up comedy skit, and her boyfriend.

According to Siti Nuramira Abdullah’s lawyer, any additional amount raised will be returned to the contributors.

"We have reached RM40,000 already so whatever monies that come after that today, we will refund to the rightful owner provided they give us the details," R Sivaraj said in a note to reporters this morning.

However, Siti Nuramira and Alexander Navin Vijayachandran may not be able to post bail today, the lawyer said, depending on whether the court will be able to process it in time.
