Snapchat tries to put itself in a positive light with a savage April Fool’s joke and a heartwarming TV ad.
These last couple of months have been a bit rough for Snapchat. Their stocks went down and they’ve taken quite a bit of heat from celebrities after publishing a poorly thought out poll featuring Rihanna and Chris Brown.
Now, they are doing anything and everything they can to try and get back in the world’s good graces – even if that means trolling Facebook. On April 1st aka April Fool’s Day, the app attempted to divert everyone’s attention away from the negativity by rolling out a very shady filter directed towards one of its biggest social media competitors.
Snapchat’s ‘Facebook filter’ seemed pretty simple at first. It started off with a Facebook UI around a user’s photo and then includes likes from “a bot” and “your mum” in Cryillic script. If you don’t really get it, this shade is a reference to the reports of Russian bots that helped influence the 2016 U.S. presidential election.
While a couple of people called out the Snapchat filter for being “liberally biased,” others thought the prank was pretty hilarious.
One user applauded Snapchat’s filter by sharing their snap and tweeting QUOTE, “I give Snap a lot of grief but today’s epic trolling of Facebook via Snapchat filter is *unbelievable*.” Another wrote, “The Russian Facebook filter is next level savagery by Snapchat.”
However, pranking Facebook wasn’t the only thing Snapchat did to try to take the heat off of itself. In a surprising move, the app released their very first TV ad campaign during the NCAA’s Final Four this past weekend by attempting to appeal to the older generation and it was actually pretty cute. Take a look.
There’s nothing like an adorable dog filter to bring the young and older generation together for a selfie, right?
