Starbucks recently came under fire after a video of two black men getting arrested at a Philadelphia Starbucks went viral. The woman who shared the video said that staff at the Starbucks called police because the two men had not ordered anything while they were waiting for a friend to arrive. Starbucks has since said the manager of that location was QUOTE, "no longer at that store."
Translation: They were fired.
Of course, just firing a manager wasn’t enough to stop the outpouring of outrage across the country, which is why Starbucks is taking a stronger course of action, by training ALL of their employees on racial bias next month.
On May 29th, during the afternoon, 8,000 of the company’s US locations will participate in the training program that will QUOTE, “Address implicit bias, promote inclusion, and help prevent discrimination.”
Nearly 175,000 employees will receive the training on May 29th, and the company is also working with the NAACP and the Anti-Defamation League to create the program.
The CEO of Starbucks said in a statement yesterday QUOTE, “I've spent the last few days in Philadelphia with my leadership team listening to the community, learning what we did wrong and the steps we need to take to fix it. While this is not limited to Starbucks, we're committed to being a part of the solution. Closing our stores for racial bias training is just one step in a journey that requires dedication from every level of our company and partnerships in our local communities.”
Once the training has been completed at all company-owned locations in the US, Starbucks will make the program available to its licensed partners.
Hopefully other companies will take note that this is the RIGHT way to respond to just ONE instance of racial discrimination happening at just ONE location.
Because just ONE case of discrimination, is still ONE too many.
