Suaram today submitted a memorandum seeking the help of the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) to exonerate or mitigate the life sentence imposed on Affandi Abdul Rahim.

Apandi was sentenced under Section 4 of the Firearms (Increased Penalties) Act 1971 after he snatched a firearm belonging to police personnel who tried to arrest him on October 27, 2001.

He then pointed the gun at the police personnel. He was 20 years old when he committed the act.

He was given the mandatory minimum sentence, which is imprisonment for life and with whipping with not less than six strokes.
