The termination of MMC-Gamuda’s contract to build the underground portion of the MRT Line 2 (MRT2) was a decision made by the Cabinet, says Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng.
On Oct 7, Lim said Cabinet had decided to terminate the MMC-Gamuda contract to build the underground portion of the MRT2 project, adding that all unfinished underground work would be re-tendered via an open tender process.
However, following protests from Gamuda that the decision would result in job losses affecting about 20,000 workers, Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said on Oct 9 that the government would reconsider the decision.
