Today’s topic of discussion had a BUNCH of people raging – and not the good and fun kind. In fact, people were FUMING when they found out about PepsiCo’s so-called plan to develop “Lady Doritos.”
However, like many trending hot topics on the interwebs, this story got just a little bit twisted and took on a life of its own after PepsiCo’s CEO Indra Nooyi opened up about the company’s plan to launch products aimed specifically at female consumers.
On a recent Freakonomics podcast, Indra commented on male and female eating habits, saying QUOTE, “Women would love to [snack like men], but they don’t. They don’t like to crunch too loudly in public. And they don’t lick their fingers generously and they don’t like to pour the little broken pieces and the flavor into their mouth.”
As you can see, this comment sparked a ton of controversy on Twitter because who doesn’t eat their chips that way, am I right? Anyway, in no shape or form did Indra say they were specifically creating another version of Doritos for ladies, but of course, it just took one person to tweet about the so-called “Lady Doritos” for the news to spread like wildfire.
Thankfully, the company decided to try and put an end to this by responding to the backlash of “Lady Doritos.” In a statement, PepsiCo said QUOTE, “The reporting on a specific Doritos product for female consumers is inaccurate. We already have Doritos for women – they’re called Doritos, and they’re enjoyed by millions of people every day. At the same time, we know needs and preferences continue to evolve and we’re always looking for new ways to engage and delight our consumers.”
Well, there you have it. Lady Doritos are NOT a thing.
