When it comes to the Olympics – be it the summer or winter games – only the best of the best are chosen to represent their country. However, one woman managed to defy the norm.
When the average human being tune in to the Olympics, we’re all expecting to see incredible tricks and performances done by the world’s greatest athletes. Sadly, for those who tuned in to the free-ski halfpipe event, they all witnessed a very subpar performance by Elizabeth Swaney, who represented Hungary in the winter games.
There were no tricks involved during her run, Elizabeth seriously just casually skied back and forth down the halfpipe and I am not kidding when I say even I could do that. And that’s not a phrase people casually utter while watching the Olympics.
Anyway, it’s safe to say that not many were blown away by Elizabeth’s run during the event. In fact, it even sparked some wonderment as to how the 33-year-old managed to make her way into the Winter Olympics to compete against, again, a bunch of the world’s elite athletes.
Well, wonder no more because the Denver Post figured it all out. According to the outlet, Elizabeth, who is a software engineer recruiter in the Bay Area by the way, became Hungary’s first Olympic freestyle skier after qualifying in the country’s quota system and competing in 13 career World Cup halfpipe contests.
While we can only assume by her performance at the Olympics that Elizabeth wasn’t the best during these competitions either, she still managed to qualify for the Olympics because one -- she rarely tumbled and two -- she placed in the top 30 at these events, which meets the Olympic requirement for a top-30 finish.
Competing in these World Cup events definitely helped Elizabeth’s cause because according to the Denver Post, Women’s pipe skiing World Cups rarely have more than 30 competitors. Elizabeth’s persistence is pretty impressive because she did make it to the Olympics after all, but not many were impressed by her actions.
One Twitter user was just appalled by Elizabeth’s lack of attempt at a trick during her run, tweeting, “I’m not sure the defense for Elizabeth Swaney is that she’s a better-than-average skier. She went to all those competitions around the world and didn’t even TRY a trick?”
While others joked about how utterly normal Elizabeth’s performance was. One user sarcastically tweeted, “I like how there were highlights at the end in case anyone missed her stunning tricks.” And comedian Rob Delaney wrote, “This is so f—ing funny. She’s so utterly normal at it; just so *unremarkable.* That she’s not “funny” bad makes it 1000% funnier.”
What did you guys think of Elizabeth’s performance? Were you moved by her persistence and simple halfpipe run or were you just not into it at all?
