YouTube RESPONDS After Getting Slammed For Restricted Mode Blocking LGBTQ Videos

After many YouTubers on the platform discovered that videos on topics such as dating, attraction, and inspiration had been hidden by default in the restricted mode. The company has released a statement in response to accusations following an uproar including videos from LGBTQ creators as well as fans who started the #YouTubeIsOverParty…
Just FYI-- YouTube's "Restricted Mode" is designed to "use community flagging" and other restrictions to "identify and filter out potentially inappropriate content.”
In the statement, which was put out by the YouTube Creators Twitter account, YouTube said QUOTE: “LGBTQ+ videos are available in Restricted Mode, but videos that discuss more sensitive issues may not be.” A YouTube spokesperson clarified what these sensitive issues my be in a statement to The Guardian, saying that while using Restricted Mode, videos “that cover subjects like health, politics and sexuality may not appear.”
YouTube said that the mode was designed to filter out “mature” content; however this restriction mode, no doubt, seems to be targeting LGBTQ content.
Gigi Gorgeous made a video explaining that when she turned the restriction mode on for her channel all that was left were videos about beauty and monthly favorite things… She explained that she gets “putting restrictions on some accounts” isn’t unfair, but said it IS unfair to put LGBTQ content in that category. She said she knows a lot of her audience is young and made it VERY clear that those are the people that could use some of her content the most.
TRUTH. Gigi just released a whole movie with YouTube available now on YouTube red documenting her transition titled “This Is Everything” So for me it’s hard to believe YouTube is against the LGBTQ community, but I do think this needs some further looking into by the brand.
Tyler Oakley recently learned one of his newest videos, "8 Black LGBTQ+ Trailblazers Who Inspire Me," was blocked under Restricted Mode and he took to Twitter saying: One of my recent videos is blocked because of this. i'm perplexed, @YouTube… Which if you think about it.. That is actually crazy a video about people doing GOOD for the world is BLOCKED for a young audience…
I get where YouTube is coming from in their statement, but think the videos that are blocked in the restricted mode needs a serious revisit…
