At this point, almost everyone with access to the Internet knows about the disgusting video Logan Paul posted just before the new year that showed a man’s dead body after he had committed suicide in a Japanese forest. YouTubers, celebrities, and thousands of fans have since spoken out on the controversial video, but there was silence coming from something very important -- YouTube itself. Now, more than a week after the video was originally posted, YouTube decided to release an open letter regarding the situation.
In a series of tweets, YouTube wrote QUOTE “Many of you have been frustrated with our lack of communication recently. You’re right to be. You deserve to know what's going on. Like many others, we were upset by the video that was shared last week. Suicide is not a joke, nor should it ever be a driving force for views. As Anna Akana (uh-kah-nuh) put it perfectly: ‘That body was a person someone loved. You do not walk into a suicide forest with a camera and claim mental health awareness.’”
One of the major criticisms people had regarding the way YouTube handled the Logan Paul situation was that they didn’t delete the video in the first place, but rather waited for him to take it off his channel. Also, Logan’s channel is still active, despite it clearly violating YouTube’s guidelines which could be cause for deletion.
The statement continued QUOTE “We expect more of the creators who build their community on @YouTube, as we’re sure you do too. The channel violated our community guidelines, we acted accordingly, and we are looking at further consequences. It’s taken us a long time to respond, but we’ve been listening to everything you’ve been saying. We know that the actions of one creator can affect the entire community, so we’ll have more to share soon on steps we’re taking to ensure a video like this is never circulated again.”
Logan is currently on a social media break right now, but he apparently plans to come back soon. I guess only time will tell if he actually ends up facing those consequences YouTube mentioned. What do you think of YouTube’s statement? Sound off in the comments below. I’m your host Emile Ennis Jr thanks for watching and I’ll see you next time.
