Zayn Malik has never been one to shy away from talking about his time in One Direction, so don’t expect him to stay quiet anytime soon.
In past interviews, Zayn talked a lot about his creative restrictions in One Direction, but this time, he’s opening up about some of the physical things he wasn’t allowed to do.
From not being able to grow out his beard to being told he had to keep his natural hair color, there were a ton of rules Zayn had to follow while he was in the boy band.
The solo singer opened up to Complex magazine about the restrictions he had to deal with and revealed that a lot of it had to do with his looks. Zayn said that it was QUOTE, “Mainly my beard, honestly. I wasn’t allowed to keep it. Eventually, when I got older, I rebelled against it, and decided to keep it anyway. That was just because I looked older than the rest of them. That’s one of the things that is now quite cool. I get to keep my beard. I also wanted to dye my hair when I was in the band, but I wasn’t allowed to.”
Wait, so the guys were allowed to get ink permanently tatted on their bodies, but they weren’t allowed to grow facial hair or change their hair colors? That doesn’t really make much sense. While Zayn doesn’t mind talking about his 1D years, there are some things he does like to keep to himself, like his relationship with Gigi Hadid.
When asked if he was getting used to his relationship constantly being in the spotlight, the singer said, “Nah. I try to keep the two very separate. I try to, as much as I can. But there’s only so much you can do. I’m learning to deal with it. It’s just one of those things now, in the background. I just leave it as a bit of noise in the background.”
Speaking of background noise, Zayn was also asked if he wants people to have sex to his music and he responded with, “Well, if that’s something that they would choose to do, then yeah. Who knows? It’s a very sexual album. I’m sure it could fit into that scenario.”
But, Zayn isn’t too worried about whether or not people make babies to his music. Instead, he’s focused on a very different goal once his debut album is released. He said QUOTE “I want to go to school. I’d love to get a degree in English, or literature…It’s always something I’ve wanted to do. I’ve always wanted to get my degree eventually. I want to do that, and hopefully write my next record while I’m doing it.”
Going to school would be a nice change in pace for the singer. After all, he does think he’s the worst at being a celebrity. Zayn admitted to the mag, “I’m a pretty shit celebrity all around. But when it comes to TV, that’s the worst. I hate the whole setup. When it’s interviews like this, I don’t mind. I’m just talking to a normal person. It’s when you’re fully glammed up and you’re sitting with a hundred lights in your face and someone is asking you question sin front of a crowd of people – that’s when it becomes a bit strange for me. I’m not a public speaker. I’m a singer.” Touche, Zayn. Tou-che.
