You never really know what you’re gonna get each year when you enter through the magical gates of Coachella, but something tells us week one was just the beginning…
Coachella-goers were in for quite a treat during week one of Coachella this year as surprise guest performances seemed to be popping up out of the woodwork, including DJ Khaled, who brought out a special guest during his set… and anotha one… and anotha one… and anotha one…
Khaled might’ve broken the record for guest performances during his set last night, bringing out Migos, ASAP Ferg, 2 Chainz, Rick Ross, French Montana, Wale and Swae Lee, totaling SEVEN. He performed hits like Migos’ “Bad and Boujee”, 2 Chainz’ “Birthday Song” and ASAP Ferg’s “Work”, and clearly the crowd was LIVING for it all.
Many other artists used their Coachella set to debut brand new music, including last-minute headliner Lady Gaga, who surprised fans by performing AND releasing a brand new single on iTunes the same night, called “The Cure,” which is quickly making its way to becoming the song of the summer.
Lorde gave the Coachella audience a heads up, saying that she had a few surprises in store, and that she did, debuting TWO new tracks from her forthcoming album Melodrama, including one called “Homemade Dynamite” and the album titled debut of “Melodrama.”
And as for unexpected performances, famous music composer Hans Zimmer delivered a mind-blowingly spectacular performance of his best known scores from films including The Lion King, Pirates of the Caribbean, Gladiator, The Dark Knight, and a surprise performance of “Freedom” by Pharrell who graced the Coachella stage, naturally sending the audience, along with the entire Twittersphere into an intense euphoric shock
Many Twitter users shared their thoughts on his performance, one writing QUOTE, “If you were at Coachella and missed Hans Zimmer you failed, it was amazing, beautiful, and legendary, I can only imagine being there” and another hilariously admitted that Hans was so amazing that her flower crown started crying.
Speaking of unexpected sets, Drake also paid a visit to the desert this weekend, because is it really Coachella without a Drake performance? The rapper appeared during Future’s set, singing hits including “Jumpman,” and getting the crowd AMPED with “Fake Love”.
And finally, the night many have been waiting for ALL year long, Kendrick Lamar closed out week one of Coachella, performing hits off his recently released album DAMN for the first time ever, and even bringing out guests of his own, including Travis Scott, Future and Schoolboy Q, and as if fans were already raving about his new album, his live performances just exceeded any and all expectations.
What a weekend it was in the desert, but if week one is any indication of how LIT week two is about to be, I can only imagine what’s in store again in just four short days… but right now I want to know all your thoughts on this year’s Coachella, if you went, if you wish you went, and which performance exceeded all your expectations, so get to talking right down here in the comments, and as always, be sure to subscribe for all the latest festival updates.
