Ariana Grande is still mourning the tragic death of ex-boyfriend Mac Miller, who passed away from a drug overdose in early September, and now she’s also dealing with her split from ex-fiancé Pete Davidson. But before any of that happened, Ari filmed an hour-long BBC Music special where she opened up about her mental health issues and why battling anxiety actually makes her feel guilty.
Ariana chatted with host Davina McCall before performing songs from Sweetener and got real about mental illness, multiple outlets report.
Ariana explained QUOTE “I almost feel guilty that I have it [anxiety] because it’s just in your head and it’s just so crazy how powerful it is. You have ups and downs and sometimes you’ll go weeks at a time where you will be crushing it and there will be no anxiety… and then something will happen that can trigger it and then you have a couple of down days.”
The “God is a Woman” singer has always struggled with anxiety, but after the Manchester terrorist attack in May 2017 that left 22 people dead and hundreds more injured, her mental illness became more intense and she also was left to deal with PTSD. She knows firsthand what it’s like to have problems with your mental health and wants all fans who also struggle to know they’re not alone.
She continued QUOTE, “The most important thing is to remember that…everybody has this. Talk to your loved ones, reach out to people, especially your friends online. Reach out to each other.”
Ari previously admitted that being back in the U.K. to film the BBC Music special was very hard and when a fan asked why there were no pictures of her out and about she replied QUOTE “sry i’m really really anxious and really exhausted and jus trying to get thru the trip. hope that’s ok. hope you enjoy the performances. my priority is giving u the best performances i’m capable of. i don’t really care ab having my picture taken. love u.”
The fact that Ariana is so open about her anxiety is amazing because it lets her fans know that they are not alone if they also struggle with mental illness.
