Ariana Grande is getting some backlash from some fans who are calling her a copycat!
Over the weekend, Ariana released her brand new music video for her song "One Last Time" that followed Ari through a crowded city, during the end of the world - thanks to a shower of meteors filling the sky. A big element of that video was that Ari was being followed by a guy who was filming all of it going down, and at the very end, the lucky guy gets a big smooch from Ariana before the world end.
Well, as original and unique as you thought this video was, come to find out there is another music video out there that looks almost identical to it. Last September, Australian group call SAFIA released a music video for their song called "You Are The One" where, you guessed it, a girl is running through crowded streets during the apocalypse while being chased by a cute guy. The comparison in style to Ari's video is really uncanny, and even the coloring of the skies are super similar. Also, at the climax of SAFIA's music video, right before the planet meets it's fate, the leading lady gets a final kiss that looks a lot like Ariana's final kiss.
As you would imagine, fans were sending messages to the Australian indie group online letting them know about the possible plagerism, and the group got really passionate about the comparison tweeting quote
it looks like either the people at Ariana Grande's label or the film maker have seen our clip for 'You Are The One' & reworked the concept a little bit and then straight up stolen and copied some bits...
Wouldn't be the first time uncreative talentless fucks from big labels and/or big film firms steal ideas from small independent creatives who are trying really hard to make something different for a change...
Yikes, then the band posted a side by side comparison of the video with the caption "YOU DON'T MESS WITH THE SAF! IT'S ONNNNN!"
Well, it seems like the band has had a bit of a change of heart retweet another message that said
Hey guys, its been a really weird 72 hours and things have escalated very quickly .....while we do find an uncanny similarity in certain parts of the two clips, there’s no way of ever proving whether Ariana’s clip was influenced by ‘You Are The One’ and it genuinely may have just been a coincidence.
We're not after Ariana, Max or their label....This is not how we want our name to reach the masses, if you hear about us we want it to be because of our music and not because of a 'scandal'.
So, it seems like the guys are taking the high road here, but what do you all think? Do you think that Ariana stole her video concept from this group? Let's talk it out in the comments, and since we're on the topic of Ariana, click here to see a roundup of all the songs we loved from her album My Everything. Im Erin Robinson, and thanks for watching
