Lower your pitch forks Beyhive because it turns out that two of Beyonce’s most emotionally driven and heartbreaking songs on Lemonade are NOT about Jay-Z. We’ve got all the details on the meanings behind the lyrics.
Sandcastles” and “Love Drought” were two of the songs that made me want to beat Jay-Z’s ass the most, but it turns out that he wasn’t even the culprit. Sorry not sorry.
Upon first listen, everyone gave Jay-Z a really hard time, my self included, because most of Lemonade insinuated that he had done B dirty, but of course, music can’t always be taken literally and tied to personal experience because there are such things as writers and co-writers. Turns out that “Love Drought,” co-written by songwriter Ingrid Burley, is actually about a rocky experience she had with Beyonce’s label. Which is information she says, even Beyonce doesn’t know.
The story goes that Beyonce’s label told Ingrid that Beyonce wasn’t listening to any new music at the time, aka Ingrid shouldn’t present anything, but then read Ingrid some notes that B had given on some new music that had presented to her so naturally Ingrid felt as though she’d been lied to.

She went on to explain the lyrics to “Love Drought” further saying that it is really all about her relationship with music in the sense that music can move mountains in regard to moving people emotionally and calm wars down as the song says, to reference times back in the day when icons like James Brown were called in to calm down riots through music. Ingrid reconciled with the whole situation saying QUOTE – “I had to internalize that and the only way that I could really get over it was kind of like, 'Hehe, she's gonna sing the song I wrote about her label one day.” As B says in “Formation,” best revenge is your paper.
“Sandcastles” is another highly talked about song on the album given the fact that it’s the ballad where you can undeniably hear pain in her voice which is why many were left confused when Jay made a very affectionate cameo during the video. But it all makes since now because, spoiler alert, that songs not about Jay-Z either. The song was written by Vincent Berry II who wrote the song about the end of a 10 year relationship he had with his ex-girlfriend. Vincent was actually homeless at the time when he was shopping the song around and so the fact that B chose his song for the album completely changed his life. He’s now in high demand, and has already signed on to work with artists like Alicia Keys, Maroon 5, Big Sean, and Eminem. But although “Sandcastles” was written mostly by Vincent, Beyonce did change the ending to make for a more hopeful tone and relevance to her own personal experiences writing - “And your heart is broken cause I walked away / Show me your scars and I won't walk away. And I know I promised that I couldn't stay, [But] every promise don't work out that way.”
So I don’t know about you guys but I feel much better knowing that those songs have little to do with Beyonce being in intense emotional pain and really are just a testament to the fact that she’s a really good actress.
