The VMA’s is causing some serious controversy.
Hey everyone, it’s Emile Ennis Jr. with Clevver News and the MTV VMA’s have stirred the pot with their latest addition to the VMA categories.
MTV announced they would be adding a new K-Pop category to the show and this did not sit well with fans.
Especially fans of BTS.
ARMY has declared on social media that this is a racist display, and that it would keep the group from competing with top acts in the pop world.
We would like to point out, however, that BTS was nominated for best collaboration (with Halsey), best art direction, and best choreography besides just being nominated for the K-Pop category but that still does not soothe the souls of the BTS Army.
They have taken to Twitter to create the hashtag #VMAsRacist, @VMAsXenophobic and #VMAsAreOverParty.
This Twitter user @ennrjb posted, “The way that BTS are shoved into a category with artists that are nowhere near their level (sales wise, touring wise, streaming wise, etc) to prevent them from getting more awards. The xenophobia #VMAsRacist”
And this user said, @TAEHYUNGPRADA also commented, “For anyone confused as to why it’s racist, they made the kpop category to limit bts and rob them from other awards. Instead of seeing bts’ achievements as their own achievements, they see it as achievements or all of kpop. Now they don’t/wouldn’t do that to Americans artists at all. #VMAsRacist”
In addition to feeling racially categorized, fans are also outraged that band was not nominated for video of the year, artist of the year, or best new artist.
“Jonas Brothers for AOTY??? LMAO!!! And what the fvck is ‘Latin Pop’ and ‘K-Pop’ category when some of them are literally bigger and outsold your white artists!!??” posted #vjkish@18. “Aren’t they all freaking Artists who deserves to be nominated fairly??”
The BTS Army is truly out for blood.
Reps for MTV have not yet released a statement on the matter, but as the power of the BTS Army grows, we are pretty sure MTV won’t stay too quiet for long.
So what do you think of the new VMA category news? Do you think it’s racist or is it giving other lesser known K-Pop artists a chance? Will MTV get rid of the category or will BTS just have to win this award besides the fan outrage? Will BTS release a statement on this matter? Let’s chat about it in the comments below.
