Camila Cabello may be taking her powerful vocals from the stage to the big screen as she’s rumored to be up for a role in the iconic movie musical West Side Story.
She can sing, she can dance, she can take on play-turned-movie adaptions – seriously, what can’t Camila do?
When renowned film director Steven Spielberg puts out a casting call for his current movie project, it’s only necessary to seek out the best possible option for the role, right? That’s why fans are itching to see Camila Cabello try out her acting chops on the big screen in the upcoming film of the classic musical West Side Story, adapted by Tony Kushner.
News of the major casting remake hit just a few weeks ago when a casting call began to circulate the Interwebs, calling for actors to fill the roles of Tony, Maria, Anita and Bernardo. The flyer also specified that white actors will be considered for Tony’s role and that Latina actors for the roles of Maria, Anita and Bernardo, keeping true to the original story, along with a few other criteria.
It didn’t take long for fans to put in their two cents as to who should be cast for the role, but leave it to Joseph Kahn, who’s mastered the Taylor Swift music video and is notorious for tweeting whatever is on his mind, to put the Camila juju out into cyberspace.
Last week, he tweeted QUOTE, “Camila Cabello as Maria in Spielberg’s Westside Story. Bet on it.” which has already generated thousands of conversations via social media. Fans have flocked Joseph’s page, along with the account which first posted the casting call, writing messages like, “I have wanted for Camila to play Maria in a re-make/new interpretation of West Side Story probably ever since I've seen the movie so YES PLEASE” and “I told my friend I wanted Camila to play Maria in the West Side Story remake and she said, “OH MY GOD!! She would be perfect for that”.
And not to mention the original 1961 film went on to win 10 Oscars, including Best Picture, so it makes perfect sense to cast only the best of the best. Not to mention the fact that Camila can sing, dance, fits the age range, and fits the broad range of Latina actresses Spielberg is said to be looking out for.
To be honest, I’m not sure why this isn’t already a sure thing yet, but I want to know what you guys think about Camila being cast as Maria – does she fit the role perfectly, or do you have another celeb in mind for the part?
