Starting the week off on a bit of a sad note, legendary radio DJ Casey Kasem has passed away at the age of 82. Kasem passed away early Sunday morning at St. Anthony's Hospital in Gig Harbor, Washington. His surviving family members -- including his children Kerri, Mike, and Julie --released the following statement on Sunday June 15th:
"Early this Father's Day morning, our dad Casey Kasem passed away surrounded by family and friends. Even though we know he is in a better place and no longer suffering, we are heartbroken. Thank you for all your love, support and prayers. The world will miss Casey Kasem, an incredible talent and humanitarian; we will miss our Dad. With love, Kerri, Mike and Julie."
Currently, no cause of death is known, but he had been bedridden for quite some time and was receiving care for bedsores around the time of his death and was also diagnosed with Parkinson's disease back in 2007. Also, there were some bizarre circumstances around Kasem in his final weeks, as a war waged between his children and his wife Jean Thompson, has Kasem had given his children authority of his medical care when he was diagnosed with Parkinson's.
He even went missing a few weeks ago, but was found in Washington State, where his daughter Kerri was given full authority over his medical care. She eventually took him off life support, which is said to be his final wishes.
Kasem had a long-spanning career in entertainment that lasted over four decades. Kasem is probably best known for launching the American Top 40 radio countdown back in 1970, which he also hosted until his retirement in 2009 when Ryan Seacrest eventually took over for him.
Speaking of, Ryan sent his condolences via Twitter, citing Kasem's signature sign off:
"Keep your feet on the ground and keep reaching for the stars. We'll miss you, Casey."
In addition to that, Kasem also voiced Shaggy on Scooby-Doo and made regular appearances on the 90's show Saved by the Bell.
It's safe to say Kasem will certainly be missed by millions. Thanks for watching Clevver News, I'm Miriam Isa, and we'll see you next time.
