Education is one of the most critical elements in breaking the relentless cycle of poverty. Behind the streets of Chow Kit, a passionate activities is providing exactly that. Since January 2016, Benz Ali has been organizing weekly street tuition sessions in the district's back alleys.
Every Sunday, Benz and his team of volunteers set up their makeshift tuition centre, providing academic guidance to those who need it most. Most of Benz's students come from both local and migrant communities. They belong to the urban poor who live around the district, those who are barely earning enough to cover the costs of living in Kuala Lumpur.
Benz first started an open library for the homeless, before eventually developing the street tuition idea. He hopes that the initiatives can cultivate a deeper interest in learning for the children, and hopefully the effort will be effective in dissuading them from being involved in drugs.
