Netflix’s new show has been causing quite the stir lately, and not for good reasons.
Insatiable, which stars Debby Ryan, has the internet up in arms over what critics call fat-shaming, bi-erasure, misogyny and more.
The show centers around a character named Patty, who’s an overweight high school student. After she gets punched in the face by a homeless guy, she gets her jaw wired shut and loses 70 pounds, thus becoming quote-unquote hot.
After the trailer was released, Twitter blew up with angry reactions from Netflix fans, who accused the show of fat-shaming. But when the actual series was finally released last Friday, the streaming platform had a whole lot more to answer for.
In addition to the accusations of fatphobia, critics also said the show was problematic in a whole lot of other ways for its mishandling of eating disorders, sexual assault, bisexual and trans characters and more.
The reviews are rough to say the least, but the Insatiable cast and crew have stood up for the show.
Creator Lauren Gussis argued that her show was just a reflection of how things are in real life. She told The Hollywood Reporter QUOTE: “That’s the reality of what still happens. There’s a lot of people in this country who are evolved. But I know that my experience was that there are still people in the world who think that stuff is okay. To portray those people who actually exist in the world, is real. I think we’re in a real danger of censorship if we decide that we all have to tell stories in a certain way so that everybody else feels safe. In my own experience, growth comes from discomfort and pain.”
Debby Ryan, who plays the main character, Patty, also added her two cents. She told USA Today QUOTE: “It's cool and encouraging to have the writing – which I think was done with fearlessness but not recklessness. I think it's intentional and careful and thoughtful about the subjects we're touching on.”
She also told Vanity Fair that she hopes viewers will see the true meaning behind the show. She said QUOTE: “I think the message is you don't have to polish things up all the time and look a certain way. We all have something that we want or try to be. As long as we are sincere and transparent, we can fuel our desires to success and lead to redemption and to make things right no matter how we look.”
Debby’s co-star, Alyssa Milano, also defended the show. She told Vanity Fair QUOTE: “The show is really a satirical look at what could happen if you do body-shame or bully someone and how that trauma affects their life,” Milano continued. “It’s also about how looks can be deceiving, an exploration of body image, about finding validation, and the desire to fill a void within ourselves.”
So, everyone who worked on Insatiable says the show is a satire, but not everyone agrees. What do you guys think? Is it a satire, or is it just plain offensive? Let us know down in the comments.
