Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad has filed a defamation lawsuit against Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi for allegedly slandering his ancestry back in 2017.

According to Berita Harian, Mahathir, 97, filed the lawsuit through Messrs Haidir & Co at the Kuala Lumpur High Court on July 20 and named Zahid, 69, as the sole defendant.

It was reported that in his statement of claim, Mahathir said Zahid issued a false, slanderous, and malicious statement deliberately referring to him during a speech Zahid made at the Kelana Jaya Umno division meeting on July 30, 2017.
