TOKYO, Japan is one of the world’s gastronomic paradises. Our Tokyo series is all about HUNTING down LOCAL spots and eating where the LOCALS EAT. We visit a hundred year old senbei or rice cracker shop in Asakusa and then it’s off to a tachi-nomi or standing bar for motsuyaki: grilled offal skewers. Think liver, intestines and rectum. Get ready for some mouthwatering food. Make sure you’re subscribed to our channel https://goo.gl/9rfeRS so you don’t miss out on heaps more food videos!

We start our day at Iriyama Senbei, a rice cracker shop which has been operating for over 100 years in Asakusa. The rice cracker dough is left to dry out in the sun for around 3 days before it is cooked over charcoal and then dipped in a soy sauce mixture. You can watch the senbei being toasted over charcoal in the shop. The senbei are hard and have a real aroma and flavour of toasted rice.

Our next stop is for a really local izakaya experience at Akitaya Toriyaki where they serve ice cold beers and motsuyaki or grilled offal skewers. This tachi nomi or standing bar floods with salarymen on their way home after work looking for a quick bite to eat and a drink. Don't be put off by the cuts of meat- they are all delicious- smoky and tender served either salted or with sauce and a dab of mustard on the side. We eat liver, rectum and the meat from the pig’s head plus Akitaya's nikomi and their tataki, the former a stew made up of beef intestines and tripe and the latter a minced pork gristle skewer, both are sensational and some of the best things we ate on this visit to Tokyo.

Where we ate:

Senbei at Iriyama Senbei, 1 Chome-13-4 Asakusa, 台東区 Tokyo 111-0032, Japan. Open 10:00am to 6:00pm. Closed Wednesday.
Skewers at Akitaya Toriyaki, Japan, 〒105-0013 Tokyo, 港区浜松町2丁目1, 第2森ビル. Open Monday to Friday 3:30pm to 9:30pm, Saturday 3:30pm to 8:30pm.
