Emma Watson clears up those Beauty and the Beast Stockholm-syndrome rumors and we’ve got new photos from the film!
Is Beauty and the Beast really the sweet fairytale we think it is?
Actress Emma Watson plays Belle in the anticipated live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast. For years, the Internet has suggested that the classic story is more than a sweet French girl falling in love with an ugly beast. Some believe the Disney story is actually one of a woman falling victim to Stockholm Syndrome by an abusive lover. In case you’re not aware, Stockholm syndrome is when a hostage starts to feel affection for their captor.
Emma Watson has now weighed in on this debate, revealing that she considered the theory before taking on the role: “It’s something I really grappled with at the beginning: the Stockholm-syndrome question.” In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Emma explained that she believes love does develop between Belle and the Beast because Belle keeps her sense of self.
Emma also pointed out that Belle is a fighter and actively decides to stay with the Beast after forming a friendship with him.
Thanks to Entertainment Weekly we’ve also got new photos of Emma in the movie. In one shot she’s walking away from Gaston’s affection, and in another she’s having a heart-to-heart with the Beast’s household staff. There’s also a shot of Belle riding in the snowy woods and finally a photo of Belle and the Beast atop the grand staircase.
Do you think Emma is right and Beauty and the Beast avoids the Stockholm syndrome curse? Tell me your decision below! Now click here to see the first clip of Gaston in the movie. I’m your host Emile Ennis Jr, I’ll see you soon.
