All you diehard trick-or-treaters, candy binge-ers, and the 6 people in the entire world who crave black licorice, the tribe has spoken.
Long were the nights we eagerly ran back home from trick-or-treating on Halloween only to dig through our pillow cases to get to that rare black licorice strip we craved all year… remember those days? Yeah, me neither.
It looks like we’ll no longer be forced to fill our trash cans with the evil twin brother of the beloved Red Vines and Twizzler treats – yeah guys, 2017 is finally looking up. After doing extensive research, the FDA has issued a warning about black licorice, which contains a sweetening compound called glycyrrhizin (gliss-or-eyes-in), that can potentially cause massive amounts of harm to the body.
So forget the horror films, terrifying “It” costumes and that post-candy-binge bloat this year, because these side effects you’re about to see, all thanks to your grandma’s favorite snack, will haunt you until your dying day. You’ve officially been warned.
DO YOU SEE THESE CHILLS?! I LEGIT GOT GOOSEBUMPS FROM WATCHING THAT. Then again, who knows what substances lie in your average run-of-the-mill Halloween candies, but that’s beside the point, nor do I ever want to know the ingredients in a king-size Snickers bar.
But as the video explains, that substance that’s already hard enough to pronounce, is said to be hard on the human body and can result in a number of side effects. However, the FDA also stated that the risk is particularly higher if you’re over 40 years old and consume more than two ounces of black licorice a day for at least two weeks… that’s some serious math equation right there. But hey, that means good news for all you 39-year-olds – you’re officially IN THE CLEAR.
So depending on your preference in Halloween candies, this PSA will either cause you intense stress or just intense indifference. Either way, steer clear of black licorice even more than you already did, and maybe take the safer route, like candy corn or, IDK, kale for that matter.
Totally kidding, but right now I have an entire bag of mini-Twix waiting for me, so I want to know your thoughts on this devastating blow – are you completely heartbroken about the news of the beloved black licorice, or entirely unphased? Share all your thoughts down here in the comments, and after that, be sure to click right over here for all the details on the Google hamburger emoji uproar. What a week for breaking news, amiright?!
