Health Minister Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad declined to comment on the ministry's policy regarding the presence of a medical officer during the caning of a syariah offender in Terengganu yesterday.
Two women who pleaded guilty to attempting same-sex relations were given six strokes of the cane in the Kuala Terengganu Syariah High Court yesterday.
It is believed that this is the first time that Malaysian women have been punished for such an offence.
It was reported that a medical officer was present to confirm that the offenders were fit to receive the punishment.
