KESUMA Dance Showcase 2014 - Da Qing ma Qiao (8)

The biannual Dance Showcase aims to demonstrate the learning outcomes of practical courses offered to students during the semester, assessed by dance lecturers and instructors throughout the staging of the dance showcase. This showcase also serves as a platform for students to create, manage, and present a stage production as well as to introduce and promote programs offered by the Dance Department of the Cultural Centre, University of Malaya.
DA QING MA QIAO (flirting), is a dance choreographed by ms. Bai Jin, a UM dance major from Yunnan, China. This piece depicts boys and girls having fun teasing one another flirtatiously before they choose their life partner. This piece was inspired by the practice of social flirtations between boys and girls in the Yi ethnic minority in Yunnan. It is customary for Yi’s girls who are above the age of sixteen to flirt with older boys to choose their husband. Based on Yi’s customary practices, Ms. Bai Jin has choreographed this piece to be premiered at this showcase.
