The biannual Dance Showcase aims to demonstrate the learning outcomes of practical courses offered to students during the semester, assessed by dance lecturers and instructors throughout the staging of the dance showcase. This showcase also serves as a platform for students to create, manage, and present a stage production as well as to introduce and promote programs offered by the Dance Department of the Cultural Centre, University of Malaya.
Originating from Bukit Keteri in the northern state of Perlis, Terinai is predominantly performed at weddings as a narrative of courtship and marriage. Dancers dance with lit candles placed on hand-held saucers and masterfully manouver the saucers around their dancing bodies. The dance is accompanied by the ‘serunai’ (double reed flute) and the ‘gendang terinai’ or ‘gendang keling’ drum ensemble consisting of two elongated barrel drums, a gendang ibu (mother drum) and a gendang anak (child drum0 with two knobbed hanging Gongs.
There are several repertoires in Terinai such as Terinai Mengadap (salutation), Ketam Bawa Anak (crabs carrying their young) and Dewa Raja (God-King). Originally, there was a strong element of improvisation based on the ‘silat’ martial arts movements, however, today, it is danced by an ensemble with set floor patterns and movements choreographed into the dance form.
