The biannual Dance Showcase aims to demonstrate the learning outcomes of practical courses offered to students during the semester, assessed by dance lecturers and instructors throughout the staging of the dance showcase. This showcase also serves as a platform for students to create, manage, and present a stage production as well as to introduce and promote programs offered by the Dance Department of the Cultural Centre, University of Malaya.
The Rejang Beuh of Bidayuh community in Sarawak is performed when paddy is finally harvested from the fields. It is a dance of joy to mark the end of the tedious process of individually looping off the paddy ears with little knife held in the palm during harvest. Rejang Beuh is characterized by the high-spirited movements executed by outstretching of hands in up-and-down motion depicting eagles in flight. Tiny bells are worn around the dancer’s ankles which provide an accompanying rhythm to the music of gongs and drums.
