Kylie Jenner and Bella Hadid are under fire for signing on as the new faces of major athletic campaigns like Nike and Puma, and boy does this have the people talkin’…
Beware of the backlash you’re about to witness because it seems as though we’ve got some major haters up in here…
It’s been an exciting few weeks for model-turned-Victoria’s Secret model Bella Hadid, who recently sprouted a pair of angel wings for the annual fashion show in December. As if that isn’t exciting enough, she also managed to tack on a huge endorsement deal with Nike this week, sharing the good news with her 7+million Instagram followers.
Although many of the comments that flooded her account were positive and congratulatory, many followers decided to take the route less appreciated… Many commenters claimed that sports campaigns should only be used for actual athletes, and even began to body-shame Bella for looking abnormally thinner than usual.
One commenter wrote QUOTE, “This is why young girls get eating disorders, when being abnormally thin is glorified. Well done @nike,” while others suggested more realistic figures to be featured, saying, “Nike? She's not an athlete but more importantly it's giving young girls unrealistic expectations yet again. Why not use Ashley Graham come on now @NIKE have some sense.”
And if the hate comments weren’t enough of a great start to the campaign, U.S. Gold Medalist Meryl Davis, who competed in the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics, even took to Twitter to share her thoughts. She posted a collage of side-by-side photos featuring Kylie Jenner’s Puma campaign, Bella’s Nike campaign and U.S. Gold Medal gymnast Aly Raisman’s Reebok campaign, writing QUOTE, “I’ll take the one promoted by the athlete please.”
Many, however, came to Bella’s defense, mentioning that Bella does indeed have a sports background. The model has previously stated that she was forced to abandon her dream of making it onto the US Olympic equestrian team due to her struggle with Lyme disease. She also recently revealed to People Magazine that due to her strict Victoria’s Secret training process, she is aware that she lost too much weight, saying QUOTE, “I didn't really mean to lose weight. Like I want boobs. I want my ass back. But it's not my fault. My weight fluctuates and so does everybody's and I think that if people are gonna judge, that's the worst you can possibly do because everybody is different.”
Well she certainly does have a point there, but I want to hear all your thoughts on the controversy… do you think athletic brands should be using only ‘real’ athletes, or are the critics being way too harsh?
