It’s been a big month for female led talk shows. First, Mindy Kaling starred in the Amazon original comedy “Late Night”, then Kelly Clarkson got her shot at a daytime talk show aptly called “The Kelly Clarkson Show”, and now, Lilly Singh is premiering her late night show “A Little Late with Lilly Singh” on NBC.

What’s up guys it’s Drew Dorsey here with Clevver News and on Monday night, Lilly Singh premiered her brand-new late-night talk show, and she made history in more than just one way.

First off, Lilly became the first woman to host a late night comedic talk show on one of the four major networks – including NBC, CBS, ABC, and FOX – since Wanda Sykes gave it a go in 2009.

She’s also currently the only woman hosting a current network late-night show.
She joins the likes of Chelsea Handler, Samantha Bee, and Busy Phillips, who have hosted “Chelsea Lately” on E!, “Full Frontal with Samantha Bee” on TBS, and “Busy Tonight” also on E!.
In addition to this, she’s making history in another way because for the first time ever, her show actually premiered on Youtube a few hours before it did on NBC.

You already know Lilly’s claim to fame is her Youtube channel, where she has garnered almost 15 million followers since she started in 2010.
A lot of her first videos covered hardships that she faced as a brown skinned young Indian woman.

And soon, within only 5 months, she had over 1000 subscribers. Fast forward to 2019 and she has millions of views on her videos. Now she’s also getting millions of views on her new talk show.

Lilly is, of course, still making youtube videos. Her last one was posted 5 days ago and pokes fun at her newly busy schedule. The description reads “As y’all can probably already tell, since starting my new late night talk show I have become too busy to do anything…so I hired a few body doubles to fill in for me”.
Lilly is very aware that she is one of the first women of color, and the first Indian woman, to have a show of this caliber, and she’s using it to her advantage.

Her show started off with a hilarious rap about how she’s planning on doing the show her way and being authentically herself.

The words go “Hello my name is Lilly and I ain’t a white man/my skin has some color and it ain’t a spray tan”.

The show airs Monday through Friday at 1:35AM on NBC. The first episode premiered on Youtube at 10PM, but fans of the show or of Lilly will have to wait until 1:35 or catch it the next day on Youtube from here on out.

She took over the timeslot for “Last Call with Carson Daly” which first aired in 2002. He was known as one of the late night greats, so Lilly certainly has some big shoes to fill.

But you know what? I know she’s got it in her. She already has a massive following thanks to her Youtube career. And she’s in a unique position for late night, because her show is aimed more at a millennial and Gen Z audience than most of the other late night programs out now.

It’ll be interesting to see what she comes up with to convince younger people to watch her show live, and not on Youtube the next day. But her first episode already did a great job of tuning people in.

The ratings for her show coincided with the finale of Last Call with Carson Daly, which ended back in May of this year. It seems like about the same amount of people who watched his show are watching hers. But there’s bound to be a bit of a change in demographics.

She had Mindy Kaling in as her first guest, which was SO fitting.

Mindy just starred in “Late Night” where she fights her way tooth and nail to the top of the corporate ladder as a writer for a late night talk show hosted by a woman, played by Emma Thompson
She also is of Indian descent, just like Lilly, and the two bonded over being some of the only Indian women in Hollywood while drawing attention to some younger Indian actresses that Mindy has discovered for a new role.
Over the past week she’s been promoting the show on other NBC programs. She was on “Today” with Hoda Kotb and Michael Strehand yesterday morning
and she was also on Late Night with Seth Meyers
So we’ve got a lot to look forward to in Lilly’s new late night talk show. What are you most excited for? What do you hope to see her do in her first season? Let me know what you think in the comment section below! Are you going to tune in live with me tonight?
