The Louvre in Paris is one of the most recognizable museums and art galleries in the world, and it is also the most visited. It was opened as a museum in 1793 and has been constantly improved and enlarged over the centuries. The Louvre is located at one end of the Champs Elysées next to the Tuileries Gardens. The glass pyramid at the entrance to the museum was added in 1989 and its design has been controversial with many believing it to be a thing of beauty whilst others claim the design conflicts with the classical style of the older structures.
It is within the building that the true beauty is beheld however, with around 380,000 pieces housed in the museum of which around 35,000 are on display at any one time.
