Millie Bobby Brown has deactivated her Twitter account after she became a popular anti-gay meme.
Sometimes the internet takes a joke way too far...
People on Twitter started making up fake homophobic stories surrounding 14 year old actress Millie Bobby Brown.
It started back at the end of last year with one user writing QUOTE, “it's time to share my story. one day i saw millie bobby brown in the mall and i asked for a selfie and she said "i don't take selfies with fa**, homo sex is sin" and broke my iphone X. i couldn't stop crying i'm so ashamed. #TakeDownMillieBobbyBrown”
The hashtag itself was apparently started by her LGBTQ fans as an obvious joke to them, because come on… it IS so unbelievable that sweet Millie Bobby Brown would EVER do anything like that.
One fan, Hannah, told BuzzFeed News that she contributed to the meme because she thought it was funny. She said QUOTE, "It would be so unlikely for Millie to ever actually say anything that homophobic that it’s hilarious," she said.
With June being Pride month, the memes have started gaining traction again, now with people photoshopping fake homophobic quotes over photos of her.
Some people took to her defense with one fan saying QUOTE, “pretending millie bobby brown, a literal child, is a violent homophobe for memes is fucking disgusting and not funny at all. You are grown adults, editing photos of her with captions that include the f slur, violence against lgbt community for comedy and it’s fucking gross.”
The trend started getting more and more widespread which presumably caused Millie Bobby Brown to delete her Twitter account.
One user tweeted, “all of y’all who deadass bullied millie bobby brown so much that she had to deactivate her twitter are disgusting, she is a CHILD ??? whats it like being an adult who bullies a fourteen year old girl?? jesus.”
Of course, all of these memes are fake, but that doesn’t make the trend any less disturbing. Plus this is the internet, and the second a meme gets more viral than the community it started in, people start believing them.
One fan account came through with the receipts for anyone who believed the stories. She posted screengrabs of tweets where Millie said she supports the LGBTQ community, and proof that Millie liked a photo of someone wearing a shirt that says “Protect Trans Kids”
Millie has yet to say anything about this trend, but we hope the internet can move on from this quickly so she feels safe to return to Twitter. What do you think of all this?
